President Donald Trump may initiate the official process for the United States to withdraw from NATO. This decision is seen not only as a threat to allies’ solidarity but also as part of an internal electoral strategy to boost his ratings.

This opinion was expressed on the “Pryamyi” broadcast by Valerii Chalyi, Ukraine’s Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador, diplomat, and Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center.
“There is a high probability that Donald Trump will start the procedure to leave NATO. He has likely already conducted internal polling among his voters on this issue,” Chalyi noted.
The diplomat emphasized that, although Trump claims that Congressional approval is unnecessary, the current NDAA law prohibits the president from unilaterally making such a decision until October 1. Using NATO as a leverage over Europe creates risks for transatlantic unity and may serve Russia’s interests.
Recently, the American president stated that the U.S. no longer needs allies’ assistance in the operation to restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, American forces have allegedly already achieved significant success by neutralizing Iran’s army, navy, air force, air defense systems, and leaders, making NATO support unnecessary.
Previously, the United States received refusals from NATO member states regarding participation in a military operation in the Middle East. This angered Trump, who stressed that he is not surprised by the allies’ reactions, as he has always viewed NATO as a structure unprepared to assist the U.S.
