Ukraine currently has an operational advantage in the war with Russia. This was stated by several retired U.S. generals and a former head of an American intelligence service, CBS News reports.

Former Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, retired Lieutenant General Robert Ashley, noted that Ukraine is “winning from an operational perspective,” as it disrupts enemy plans and maintains freedom of action.
His assessment was supported by two other retired American generals, who believe that at the battlefield level, Ukraine is operating more effectively than Russian forces.
The assessments by military officials followed a statement by Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi that the Ukrainian army has retaken about 600 square kilometers of territory since the beginning of the year. At the same time, he did not specify where exactly these gains occurred, noting that the fiercest fighting is taking place in southeastern Ukraine.
Experts also note the growing role of Ukrainian medium- and long-range drones. According to them, drones are responsible for a significant share of Russian losses, and their use has expanded considerably since 2024.
At the same time, retired General Joseph Ralston noted that neither side is currently capable of achieving a full victory, and the conflict remains a stalemate.
Military analyst Rob Lee added that Ukraine has significantly strengthened its ability to carry out strikes at a distance of 50–100 km and now uses them regularly in combat conditions.
