📨 Trump officially informed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of the decision in a letter shared on social media. The U.S. President warned that tariffs may increase further if Canada responds with reciprocal measures.
🌍 In addition to Canada, the U.S. plans to introduce general tariffs of 15–20% for most trade partners, while some countries, such as Brazil, may face tariffs of up to 50%. A 50% tariff on copper has already been imposed.
💬 “We’re simply setting our tariffs… all other countries will pay either 20% or 15%,” Trump said in an interview with NBC.
🇨🇦 In response, Prime Minister Carney stated that Ottawa will continue to defend its economic interests in trade negotiations with the U.S. and noted progress in the fight against fentanyl, calling for continued cooperation with Washington.
📜 Exceptions under the USMCA agreement are expected to remain in place, and tariffs on energy products and fertilizers will stay at 10%.
