European countries should strive for independence, as they cannot fully rely on the USA and NATO, stated Scott Lucas, Professor of American Studies at University College Dublin, on Espreso.

According to him, the present moment is the most dangerous time for Europe since 1945. “Donald Trump and many of his advisers are no longer allies of Europe, they do not see NATO as serving their interests and do not want it to expand. Trump’s new security strategy is aimed at destroying the European Union,” Lucas noted.
The professor also pointed out that Trump’s team is promoting nationalist views and conspiracy theories, fueling fears that “white Europeans” will be opposed by “non-whites,” including refugees. Among the supporters of these ideas are J.D. Vance and a number of young American politicians who have joined the administration.
“Not only Denmark is sounding the alarm. It is now being said that Europe cannot rely on the USA and NATO. European countries need to become self-sufficient and protect European culture in their confrontation with the USA,” Lucas concluded.
