Vitaker emphasized that Alliance countries must remain strong militarily, socially, and institutionally in order to effectively protect their values and way of life. He stressed that the cohesion which has ensured NATO’s stability for 76 years must continue to be maintained.
Amid Russian aggression against Ukraine and the rise of hybrid threats, Alliance unity is critically important. According to Vitaker, Vladimir Putin is trying to divide the allies, but his attempts are failing — on the contrary, this is stimulating new initiatives in Europe and the US.
The American ambassador also highlighted that the United States under President Donald Trump remains committed to NATO, and that strengthening Europe and collective defense only enhances all participants.
Vitaker praised Germany for adopting a detailed defense roadmap through 2029 — six years earlier than planned. In his view, Germany can serve as an example for other member states.
The diplomat urged allies to more actively invest in advanced technologies, develop defense capabilities, increase industrial production, and enhance resilience to hybrid threats. He identified the protection of unity as the most important task — NATO’s key strategic advantage.
