Speaking at the opening of the Rheinmetall plant in Unterlüß, he noted that Europe plans to produce 2 million shells by the end of 2025, a significant portion of which will be supplied by Rheinmetall. Rutte also called on manufacturers to increase the production of tanks, air defense systems, and missiles, raising the production standards across the Alliance based on Ukraine’s experience.
According to the Secretary General, Russia and China are actively expanding their military capabilities, so NATO must strengthen its industrial base, restart halted production lines, and reduce dependence on critically important raw materials from third countries.
Rutte emphasized the importance of the defense industry in Germany, Europe, and North America for the Alliance’s security, praising the rapid construction of the new Rheinmetall plant (14 months) and Germany’s plans to invest around €153 billion in defense by 2029.
