Initially, the plan was for the permanent deployment of 10,000 troops. At the same time, according to sources, in the event of a threat to Alliance countries or a violation of a possible peace by Russia, another 10,000 troops may be temporarily deployed.
The base is also intended for storing missiles, ammunition, and armored vehicles, which will be transferred to Ukraine after ensuring the security of supply routes.
🏗️ Modernization of the base
“Mihail Kogălniceanu” is one of the largest infrastructure projects of the Romanian army. Its development is planned to cost €2.5 billion, of which €400 million should come from EU funds.
By 2040, this airbase may become the largest in Europe, surpassing Germany’s “Ramstein.”
