NATO member countries are considering a tougher response to increasing provocations from Russia, including the possibility of military actions, according to the Financial Times.

Among the proposed measures are the deployment of strike drones along the Russian border and the relaxation of rules for pilots, allowing them to open fire in case of a threat from Russian aircraft. The aim of these steps is to raise the cost of “hybrid warfare” for Moscow and establish clear countermeasures in response to Russian drones and aircraft violating NATO airspace.
The discussion was initiated by countries bordering Russia, with support from France and the United Kingdom. Initially, negotiations were held in a small circle, but now the discussion has expanded to include more Alliance members due to the growing Russian threat.
Some countries advocate for a tougher NATO stance as a means of deterring the aggressor, while others propose a more cautious approach, wary of the risk of direct conflict with a nuclear state.
There are currently no set timelines for decision-making, and changes in position may remain confidential. Key proposals include:
- Equipping reconnaissance drones to monitor Russian troops;
- Relaxing rules for pilots patrolling the eastern flank;
- Conducting NATO exercises near the Russian border, including in lightly defended areas.
