📽️ Thorne, known for his work in astrophysics and gravity, as well as his involvement in the films “Interstellar,” “Tenet,” and “Oppenheimer,” stated that many breakthrough technologies—such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence—require decades of government funding before the private sector gets involved.
💬 “And in the USA, Donald Trump is currently destroying this. We are on the verge of a scientific disaster. Europe—Ukraine, Germany, France—must take the initiative into their own hands,” Thorne said.
💸 He stressed that private funds cannot fully compensate for the reduction of government funding for major scientific projects. Thorne emphasized that the current administration is cutting key programs that are critically important for the future of scientific progress.
🌍 According to the scientist, there are currently no strong enough international alliances that could support American science under these conditions. Therefore, he believes scientists must “do everything possible for Trump and his supporters to lose power within the next 2–4 years.”
🇺🇦 Thorne also highlighted the importance of supporting the democratic world, particularly Ukraine, in opposing putin. He does not expect significant help from the USA if Trump remains in power.
🇫🇷 In this context, the physicist recalled the recent invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron for scientists from around the world to move to France or Europe—as a response to the reduction of scientific support in the USA.
