Hungary’s demands to introduce quotas for national minorities in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine contradict the Constitution and constitute interference in the internal affairs of the state. This was stated by candidate of political sciences, head of the political and legal programs at the NGO “Ukrainian Center for Social Development” Ihor Reiterovych.

According to him, Ukrainian legislation does not provide for ethnic or national quotas in the formation of parliament, and all citizens have equal rights without privileges based on origin.
Reiterovych emphasized that the position of the majority of representatives of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine is pro-Ukrainian and constructive, and their rights, in his assessment, are already protected in accordance with European standards.
At the same time, he called the idea of introducing quotas for ethnic groups in parliament “absurd” and directly contrary to the Constitution of Ukraine.
“This issue has been postponed, as it would require amendments to the Constitution and a large number of laws. Neither the authorities nor society will agree to this,” he noted.
The expert also pointed out that the only quotas applied in Ukraine in line with European practice are gender quotas in electoral lists, which comply with European standards of equality and representation.
