WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Hanan Balkhy stated that the organization is considering scenarios involving both attacks on nuclear facilities and the possible use of nuclear weapons. According to her, even the best preparation cannot fully prevent large-scale consequences for the region and the world, which could be felt for decades.
WHO emphasizes that currently there are no signs of radioactive contamination recorded in the Middle East. At the same time, if radiation levels increase, serious health consequences are possible, including damage to the lungs and skin, as well as an increased risk of cancer and mental disorders.
The organization expresses hope that the worst-case scenario will not materialize, but continues to prepare for a potential emergency situation.
