According to her, the European Commission does not want inter-state issues to affect the negotiation process, but is ready to help reconcile parties if such situations arise.
“We do not want bilateral issues between countries to affect the EU accession process. However, we have already had such experience. If it happens, we are ready to help,” Kos said.
She stressed that the principle of good neighbourly relations is a key value of the European Union and is much easier to ensure within shared membership.
During her visit on June 8, Kos met with several Ukrainian officials, including Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction Oleksii Kuleba, and Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk.
The commissioner also visited sites of Russian strikes in Kyiv, including a residential building on Degtyarivska Street in the Shevchenkivskyi district, which was hit by a Kh-101 missile on May 24, and the Lukianivka area, which suffered significant destruction.
Before arriving in Ukraine, Marta Kos had been on a working visit to Moldova.
