The informal European Union summit will take place in Cyprus on April 23–24. According to European Council President António Costa, the meeting will address the global geopolitical situation, the conflict in the Middle East, and the EU budget.
It is also expected that special attention will be given to the situation surrounding contacts between Hungarian government officials and the Russian side.
European Commission spokesperson Paeño previously stated, commenting on reports about talks between Sergei Lavrov and Péter Szijjártó, that they “highlight the worrying possibility that a member state government acted in collusion with Russia.”
Later, the European Commission confirmed that von der Leyen will raise this issue at the level of EU leaders.
The next official EU summit is scheduled for June 18. Journalists note that the Cyprus meeting may be the last opportunity to discuss the situation surrounding Orbán in such a format among bloc leaders.
