In mid-September, the United States, South Korea, and Japan will organize large-scale trilateral exercises called Freedom Edge, aimed at strengthening security cooperation and countering threats from North Korea. This was reported by Yonhap, citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The maneuvers will take place from September 15 to 19 in international waters east and south of South Korea’s Jeju Island. The military will practice operations at sea, in the air, and in cyberspace, as well as enhance interoperability for effective trilateral cooperation.
This will be the third round of joint exercises, following two stages in June and November 2024. They will become the first large-scale drills under the presidencies of Lee Jae-myung in South Korea and Donald Trump in the United States.
Pyongyang strongly opposes these exercises and threatens to respond in the event of provocations. The North Korean authorities call them an attempt to strengthen a U.S.-led military bloc.
The JCS emphasized that the exercises are regular allied drills, provided for by the mutual defense treaty, and are conducted to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, as well as to support peace and stability in the region.
