Ahead of the official meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, scheduled for November 7, a group of American senators called on Budapest to end its dependence on Russian energy resources, Bloomberg reported.

In a resolution obtained by the outlet, lawmakers expressed concern that Hungary is not showing readiness to reduce its imports of Russian fossil fuels. The document was signed by 10 senators from both parties — including Republicans Roger Wicker, Thom Tillis, and Mitch McConnell, as well as Democrats Jeanne Shaheen, Chris Van Hollen, and Chris Coons.
The senators reminded that the EU initiative calls for a complete halt to Russian energy imports by 2027 and urged Orbán to adhere to this commitment.
“Vladimir Putin is a war criminal who uses energy exports to fund his campaign of aggression. The resolution aims to ensure that energy dependence does not become a weapon in the hands of a dictator,” said Republican Senator Thom Tillis.
His colleague, Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, added that while most European nations have already reduced their energy ties with Moscow, Hungary’s stance “undermines collective security and plays into the Kremlin’s hands.”
According to Bloomberg, Orbán — who maintains long-standing ties with American conservatives — may seek Trump’s approval during the meeting for continued purchases of Russian oil, despite the EU’s sanctions policy.
