🏛️ The Deputy Head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag, Norbert Röttgen, called for the confiscation of about €250 billion of frozen Russian state assets in the EU. This was reported by Reuters.

⚖️ Röttgen believes that such an initiative does not contradict international law, as it concerns exclusively the funds of the aggressor state, not private individuals. He emphasized that this money should go to the restoration of Ukraine and compensation for the destruction.
💬 “This will only deter those investors who plan a war of aggression. Those who have no such intentions have nothing to fear,” the politician said.
🏦 After the rf invasion in 2022, Western countries froze about $300 billion of the Central Bank of rf’s assets, of which about €210 billion are held in Europe — mainly at Belgium’s Euroclear.
📊 Currently, the EU uses only the profits from these assets to aid Ukraine, but the question of full confiscation remains open. France and Belgium have voiced opposition to confiscation, citing legal risks and China’s reaction.
💡 One compromise option is to provide Ukraine with so-called “reparations loans,” secured by the frozen Russian assets. If Moscow refuses to pay reparations, these assets could be used to cover the payments.
