This was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump during discussions with EU leaders on possible steps to end the war in Ukraine, The Telegraph reported, citing diplomatic sources.
According to the outlet, Trump put forward this proposal during informal consultations with European leaders. He also expressed disappointment that despite the West’s efforts, Russia continues its massive missile strikes on Ukrainian cities.
In addition, the American president emphasized the need for secondary sanctions against states that maintain economic ties with the Kremlin, particularly those purchasing Russian oil.
Tensions are also rising in relations between Washington and New Delhi. The U.S. has already imposed 25% tariffs on Indian companies buying Russian oil, which increased the overall tariff level on Indian goods to 50%.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that if sanctions against Moscow’s trading partners are applied on a larger scale, the Russian economy could be on the verge of collapse. He stressed that there is now a kind of race underway: between the resilience of Ukrainian troops and the ability of the Russian economy to withstand sanctions pressure.
