On social media, he stated that the company agreed to use cane sugar in beverages produced in the United States. Coca-Cola has not yet clearly confirmed Trump’s claim, according to The New York Times.
“I negotiated with Coca-Cola about the possibility of using REAL cane sugar in Coca-Cola in the U.S., and they agreed. This will be a very smart decision on their part — you’ll see. It will be better this way,” Trump wrote.
Currently, Coca-Cola uses high-fructose corn syrup in its American products. The company began adding it to its drinks in 1980, blending it with sugar to offset rising sugar prices.
“We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand. Detailed information about new innovative offerings in our Coca-Cola product line will be released soon,” said company spokeswoman Michelle Agnew.
Meanwhile, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has expressed concern about the health impact of this ingredient, calling it one of the causes of the obesity epidemic.
Trump regularly drinks Diet Coke, which contains the artificial sweetener aspartame. There is even a special button on his desk in the Oval Office to have that specific soda brought to him.
