U.S. President Donald Trump informed his national security advisors that if a decision is made to take military action against Iran, he wants a “swift and decisive strike” that would not escalate into a prolonged war, NBC News reports, citing its sources.

According to one of the publication’s sources, Trump expects any action to be final. At the same time, advisors could not guarantee a rapid collapse of the Iranian regime following a potential strike. The White House also fears that the U.S. may not have sufficient resources in the region to counter an Iranian response.
These risks could lead Trump to opt for a limited initial military operation with the possibility of further escalation. NBC News sources emphasize that as of January 14, no final decision has been made.
During his visit to Detroit on January 13, Trump addressed Iranian protesters, saying that “help is already on the way,” and called the situation in Iran “unstable.” A U.S. official and several individuals familiar with the discussions confirmed that the president is prepared to support protesters, including with military means.
On the same day, Trump outlined the potential objectives of U.S. action in Iran to his team, after which the Pentagon prepared several military scenario options. The White House noted that all options remain at the president’s disposal, and past U.S. operations in Iran and Venezuela underscore the seriousness of his intentions.
