Recall that in June, alliance members agreed to increase defense budgets to 5% of GDP. However, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the country would not meet this requirement, as it is “incompatible with our social state and our worldview.”
During a meeting in the Oval Office with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Trump emphasized that European leaders should pressure Spain to strengthen its commitments to NATO.
“You people need to start talking to Spain. Call them and find out why they are lagging. They have no excuse not to do it. But if they don’t want to — maybe you should frankly kick them out of NATO,” Trump said.
His comments sparked active reactions among diplomats and experts, as such a statement could strain relations within the alliance, which is currently trying to strengthen unity amid ongoing global conflicts.
