Poroshenko participated in the European People’s Party (EPP) leaders’ summit, attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, heads of state and government from 11 EU countries—including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, EPP President Manfred Weber—and opposition leaders from several European countries.
The fifth president of Ukraine stressed that the only way to prevent global upheaval is to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“Many are now looking at the Middle East and Iran, but it all started with Ukraine and Russia’s war. The best way to stop global turmoil is to eliminate its root causes. You can resolve dozens of wars, but history will remember those who stopped Russia’s war against Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.
He outlined three priorities:
Restoring Transatlantic Unity
Poroshenko noted that enemies fear the unity and coordination of the West. “Transatlantic unity has never been a given. But when it existed, no enemy of democracy dared to challenge us,” he explained.
Strengthening Ukraine and Weakening Russia
To strengthen Ukraine, it is necessary to provide:
- unrestricted support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
- delivery of weapons without delays;
- development of Ukraine’s defense industry as part of the EU defense sector;
- sustainable economic and financial support, including a €90 billion loan and use of frozen Russian assets;
- security guarantees, including EU membership and the presence of Coalition troops.
To weaken Russia, political, economic, and sanction pressure must be increased, including the adoption of the EU’s 20th sanctions package targeting Russia’s oil and gas industry, and ensuring Russia’s inevitable accountability for all crimes.
“If Russia wants a long war, we must make it economically impossible. Only by strengthening Ukraine and weakening Russia can we find a path to end the war. The starting point must be an immediate, unconditional, and comprehensive ceasefire,” Poroshenko emphasized.
Internal Resilience of Ukraine
This includes internal unity, forming a national unity coalition, guaranteed independence of anti-corruption institutions, criminal accountability for all uncovered corruption schemes, and implementation of 10 key fundamental reforms.
“Pressure on political opponents, civil society, and the media in Ukraine must end. Restrictions on parliamentary diplomacy must be lifted. Illegal and unconstitutional sanctions and blackmail against opponents must be forgotten forever,” added the opposition leader.
