According to a White House representative, Trump expressed support for the document back in mid-November. The bill provides for punishing countries that purchase cheap Russian oil and gives the US president tools to influence states such as China, India, and Brazil in order to reduce their purchases of Russian energy resources.
Senator Lindsey Graham noted that the bill aims to increase economic pressure on Moscow and cut funding for Vladimir Putin’s military machine.
Despite support from the White House, Congress has not yet considered the initiative, focusing instead on passing the budget and other priority bills. Republican lawmakers have expressed dissatisfaction with the delay, while the leadership of the House of Representatives and the Senate has not yet decided which chamber will start voting.
The White House confirmed that Trump’s support for the sanctions remains in effect, but further progress of the bill depends on Congress’s legislative schedule.
