According to Moore, at the start of the war Western analysts expected that it would be extremely difficult for Ukrainian forces to hold back the Russian army’s advance. However, events on the battlefield quickly disproved those forecasts.
“We thought it would be hard for the Ukrainians to hold back the Russians. We underestimated just how bad the Russian army turned out to be on the battlefield,” the former MI6 chief noted.
Richard Moore also separately emphasized the role of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stressing his key importance in resisting Russian aggression.
He called Zelensky “a different kind of leader,” highlighting his personal courage and determination to stay in the country and lead the resistance at the most critical moment.
“He was incredibly brave, stayed, and led his people in resisting the Russian invaders,” Moore concluded.
