U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Vitaker reiterated President Donald Trump’s call for allies to join a military mission in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes. According to him, allies should support the U.S. and help ensure the security of the shipping route.

Currently, the strait is effectively closed due to threats from Iran, which has led to a sharp rise in oil prices — last week, the price per barrel exceeded $100.
At the same time, four NATO diplomats noted that a full-scale Alliance mission against Iran is unlikely. The main reasons are:
- It is difficult to obtain unanimous support from all allies;
- The operation would not have a significant effect compared to bilateral U.S. support from individual countries.
So far, the U.S. has not officially requested assistance from NATO countries, and the mission does not fall directly under the Alliance’s responsibilities.
