The US Drug Enforcement Administration has designated Colombian President Gustavo Petro as a priority target due to an investigation into his possible ties with drug traffickers. Federal prosecutors in New York are examining information regarding Petro’s contacts with the Sinaloa cartel and other drug cartels.

Documents indicate that since 2022, a series of investigations have been conducted against the president, partly based on confidential informant testimony. Possible scenarios under review include the use of his “total peace” policy to benefit drug traffickers, as well as the financing of his election campaign with cartel funds.
Additionally, schemes involving the smuggling of cocaine and fentanyl through Colombian ports with the involvement of law enforcement officials are being examined. Priority target status is assigned to individuals who, according to the US DEA, have significant influence over drug trafficking.
