The European Union must open membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova by the end of 2025. This was stated by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on October 2 ahead of the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen.

Metsola emphasized that Moldova is confidently moving along the pro-European course despite the Kremlin’s attempts to interfere in the country’s internal processes. “The people clearly voted for the path to Europe, and pressure from Russia could not prevent this,” she noted.
According to her, Moldovan President Maia Sandu clearly articulated the course toward EU accession during her election campaign. That is why, Metsola stressed, it is time to move from declarations to practical steps: “We must begin membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova this year.”
The head of the European Parliament highlighted that EU enlargement is not charity but a strategic interest. According to her, new members will strengthen security, political stability, and confirm that the doors of the European Union remain open to those who seek to join.
