European Council President António Costa stated that the European Union considers it necessary to increase pressure on Moscow to force Russia to come to the negotiating table and achieve a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine. His speech took place at the annual EU Ambassadors Conference in Brussels.

According to Costa, there is only one real beneficiary in the current war — Russia. It undermines Ukraine’s positions, ignores international law, gains new resources to fund the war due to rising energy prices, and profits from redirecting military potential and reducing attention to the Ukrainian front because of the conflict in the Middle East.
The President of the European Council emphasized that in December the European Council approved a joint €90 billion loan to cover Ukraine’s financial needs over the next two years. “We will fulfill this commitment, undertaken by all the leaders,” Costa stressed.
