Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the war in Ukraine has “distorted freedom of speech” in the European Union, and that his own opinion on the matter “almost cost him his life,” reports Denník N.

Fico denies accusations from the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs of allegedly offensive rhetoric against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. In his social media post, he consistently outlined his position on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The day before, the Slovak premier commented on the upcoming talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Putin, using the saying:
“Whether elephants fight or make love — the grass always suffers.”
Fico emphasized that any opinion differing from the official EU position faces harsh criticism and condemnation, even if it is based on facts.
“As the prime minister of a sovereign country, I will maintain my right to freedom of speech, even if it causes discomfort among my colleagues in the EU and Ukraine. My opinion on the conflict almost cost me my life,” he said.
At the same time, Fico wished Kyiv a swift and just peace and called to end the “senseless killing of Slavs.”
