The North Atlantic Council convened on September 22 at Estonia’s request under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty to condemn the dangerous violation of Estonia’s airspace by three Russian MiG-31s on September 19. NATO aircraft were scrambled to intercept and escort the intruders out of Estonian territory.
The statement noted that this intrusion is part of a broader pattern of Russia’s irresponsible behavior. Previously, on September 10, the North Atlantic Council had already convened due to Russian drone violations of Polish airspace. Additionally, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Romania have recently experienced similar incidents.
NATO emphasizes that Russia’s actions are escalatory, risky, and endanger human lives. In response, the Alliance launched the “Eastern Sentry” operation to strengthen positions on the eastern flank and enhance air defense capabilities.
The Alliance added that Russia should have no doubt: NATO will use all necessary military and non-military means to protect and deter threats. Article 5 of the treaty remains unwavering.
NATO also stressed that Russia’s irresponsible actions will not prevent Alliance members from supporting Ukraine, ensuring its right to self-defense against Russian aggression.
