🏛️ On May 20, Rubio spoke before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stating that the White House is not lifting sanctions on russia, and the U.S. continues to supply Ukraine with weapons and intelligence.
📜 The publication reminds that the largest sanctions, especially in energy and banking sectors, cannot be lifted without the approval of the U.S. Congress.
🤐 However, Rubio did not mention this during his speech because if Congress suddenly lifted the sanctions, the U.S. would effectively become accomplices in russia’s war and war crimes in Ukraine, which both chambers of Congress have already condemned.
💬 A source close to Rubio noted that he regularly insists on strengthening anti-russian sanctions.
🔥 “Rubio raises the topic of sanctions almost daily. He wants Congress to pass Graham’s bill on tough sanctions against russia since he has a Senate majority that will not allow a veto. This would disrupt any reset of relations with Moscow,” the source said.
❌ At the same time, Trump does not support additional sanctions, although, as WSJ wrote, he finally acknowledged that russia has no intention of ending the war.
