Russian troops achieved tactical success on the Pokrovske direction thanks to over 17 months of preparation, systematic drone strikes, the destruction of Ukrainian UAVs, and the interception of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ ground communication lines. ISW experts note that this advance has not only a military but also a political dimension, as the Kremlin seeks to use it to exert pressure on the upcoming U.S.–Russia summit in Alaska.

Russia is actively using FPV drones, relays, “sleeping” low-energy devices, and fiber-optic modifications resistant to electronic warfare, with Chinese partners supplying components and production capacities. The advance on the Pokrovske direction is the result of a campaign since February 2024, during which Russia advanced 55 km, losing more than five divisions of armored vehicles and tanks.
The Kremlin aims to use this success to pressure the U.S. and its allies, emphasizing the strategic importance of holding eastern Ukraine and the land corridor to Crimea. Russian officials repeat demands to stop NATO expansion, change Ukrainian leadership, and control eastern Ukraine’s resources.
ISW experts emphasize that Russia seeks Ukraine’s complete capitulation and is trying to influence the summit’s outcomes. However, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he does not plan to make a peace agreement during the meeting and sees Putin’s intentions as an effort to subjugate all of Ukraine.
Previous events:
– On August 12, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt confirmed the summit, noting that the invitation came from Putin via a U.S. special envoy.
– On August 11, Trump called the meeting a “test” and mentioned the possibility of follow-up talks, including the return of Ukrainian territories, but warned about a potential walkout.
– U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker allows for Zelensky’s participation in the summit.
– NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that Trump opened the possibility of ending the war, but everything will depend on the U.S. president’s determination.
