Petro Poroshenko stated that one should not expect a positive outcome from negotiations with Putin. Poroshenko reminded that Putin cannot be trusted, and any discussions with him must be conducted from a position of strength.

“Trump thinks that Putin is negotiating with him and trying to get better peace terms. This is not true. Putin is not negotiating. He has a completely different understanding. Putin wants to restore the Soviet Union. Putin wants to restore the Russian Empire. I have no doubts about this. Putin dreams of his place in history. And it doesn’t matter at what cost in lost lives — Russian lives, and of course, Ukrainian lives,” Poroshenko said.
He also noted that Putin is not interested in capturing additional lands in eastern Ukraine that his forces have failed to take and which he demands to be handed over under any peace agreement.
According to Poroshenko, Putin uses this demand “to try to destabilize the internal political situation in Ukraine” and to break the country’s unity, since any territorial concession would have to be put to a referendum, which would divide Ukrainians. “This is the Russian scenario. Remember, Putin is a KGB officer. He is an expert in such matters,” Poroshenko said.
Poroshenko also considers it a mistake to exclude European allies from the negotiation process. “Europe has every right to be at the negotiation table because it is currently financing Ukraine. Nevertheless, without Trump, without America, achieving a peace agreement is impossible. The role of the United States is important, but without Europe, nothing will work either. They can play the good cop and bad cop,” he added.
