Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that the European Union’s support for Ukraine weakens the bloc.

In an interview with Magyar Nemzet, he noted that in all scenarios for ending the war, Ukraine’s EU membership is “just sugar-coating a bitter pill.”
When asked whether it would be acceptable for Budapest if Ukraine’s EU membership came at the price of peace, Orbán replied: “Fortunately, no such link exists. EU membership is not a guarantee of protection. That will never happen. Ukraine’s EU membership is not realistic.”
He added that Hungary openly opposes starting negotiations on this matter and noted that Brussels is supposedly aware of this.
“The people of Europe clearly see that Ukraine’s accession will not add strength to the Union, but will take it away. Today they still say that Ukraine’s military power increases Europe’s security, but that is not true. Keeping Ukraine drains energy and resources from Europe,” Orbán concluded.
