Orbán sharply criticized the EU’s decision, calling it “clearly illegal” and contrary to European values. According to him, Brussels adopted it not for joint energy security but “to remove a national government that disagrees with EU policy.”
The Hungarian prime minister stated that he will appeal to the European Court, insisting that the bloc’s decision is not a sanction but a trade policy measure. He emphasized that sanctions require unanimous support from all EU countries, while trade matters can be approved by majority vote.
Orbán also added that he is looking for “other, non-legal” ways to influence Brussels, though he has not disclosed details yet.
Hungary’s move could create new tensions between Budapest and European institutions amid the war in Ukraine and the EU’s energy reorientation.
