Germany supports maintaining Ukraine’s territorial integrity and does not approve of concessions to Russia on land issues. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a working visit to the USA. He expressed doubt about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to genuinely agree to a peace deal.

Merz emphasized that Kyiv’s partners are interested in ending the war as quickly as possible, but Ukraine must retain its territories and security. During talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, they discussed ways to accelerate the end of hostilities and the necessity of safeguarding Ukraine’s interests.
The Chancellor stressed that Russia is trying to buy time, acting contrary to Trump’s intentions, and that there are serious doubts in Europe about the Kremlin’s readiness for a genuine peace agreement. He added that any agreements regarding Ukraine must involve European partners and cannot be made without European representation.
According to Merz, Russia is currently in a vulnerable position, so pressure on it should be increased to force real concessions and ensure a peace acceptable to both Ukraine and Europe.
