Vance said he was disappointed by Orbán’s defeat, but emphasized that the support was a gesture of gratitude from the U.S. administration for Orbán’s position in defending American interests in relations with the EU.
“He is one of the few European leaders we’ve seen who is willing to stand up to the bureaucracy in Brussels, which has been very, very harmful to the United States. For example, when a European official speaks out against an American company, sometimes the only ‘no’ vote is Viktor Orbán,” Vance said.
He also added that the U.S. administration was aware of the high likelihood of Orbán’s defeat but still chose to support him as a politician who had long been an ally of Washington.
“I think his legacy in Hungary is transformational — 16 years that fundamentally changed the country,” the U.S. vice president noted.
At the same time, Vance stressed that the United States is ready to cooperate with Hungary’s new Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
