“It is extremely important to increase pressure on Putin so that he agrees to negotiations. We must use all available means to block the financing of his military machine, including new sanctions,” Tajani emphasized.
According to him, the EU is working on reaching an agreement on the 19th sanctions package, which is expected to significantly impact Russia’s financial flows. Meanwhile, the US and the EU are coordinating their actions, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the bloc is considering a faster phase-out of Russian fossil fuels.
This year, the EU is expected to purchase about 13% of its gas from Russia, but negotiations are underway on legislative proposals to end Russian oil and gas imports by January 1, 2028.
Tajani also proposed expanding NATO’s mutual defense program for Ukraine without granting full membership to guarantee its security in the event of a peace agreement.
