Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg is attempting to reach the Gaza Strip as part of a flotilla of 20 boats with 350 pro-Palestinian activists, which set off from Barcelona on September 1. Her goal is to “open a humanitarian corridor.”

However, journalists have pointed out the vessel Thunberg is traveling on. The ship, Family Madeira, built in 1969, was called a “floating polluter” and a “nightmare for climate defenders” by Bild.
According to the publication, the ship burns up to 45 liters of diesel per hour at a speed of 9 knots (16.6 km/h). On the Barcelona–Gaza route (over 3,000 km), this amounts to about 5,000 liters of fuel at normal speed, or up to 8,000 liters at full speed. For comparison, a passenger car could circle the globe twice on that amount of diesel.
Journalists also reminded that Thunberg herself has previously called cars “a major source of environmental pollution.” Meanwhile, Family Madeira is only one of the 20 vessels in the flotilla; some are small sailing yachts, but the total fuel consumption of the entire group is still enormous.
