In Ukraine, alongside mobilization, recruitment into the Defense Forces is actively developing — a voluntary approach that allows individuals to choose a position and unit. Through digital services, candidates can apply for vacancies, undergo selection, and even influence their place of service.

How recruitment works

Military recruitment involves the voluntary selection of a vacancy, submitting an application, and passing selection, similar to civilian employment. A candidate independently chooses several position options in the “Reserve+” app, prepares a resume, and submits an application.

It is important to consider not only military but also civilian experience, as it may be key in determining the role within a unit.

Difference from mobilization

Mobilization is a mandatory process in which citizens are called up for military service by state decision.

At the same time, even within mobilization, it is possible to try to join a specific unit — for this, an application must be written to the commander of that unit.

Contract service

Contract service has separate conditions: in addition to an application, a recommendation letter is required, as well as a visit to the Territorial Recruitment Center (TRC). Such a letter is valid for one month.

Units are divided into priority and non-priority — the latter are harder to join, as the decision must be approved by the General Staff. The status of a unit can be learned during an interview.

If the TRC does not take the recommendation letter into account and sends a person to another unit, it is advised to contact representatives of the chosen unit or the support service of the recruitment platform.

Contract service can last from 1 to 5 years or more depending on the category of servicemember and specialty. For some specialists during martial law, shorter contracts are provided.

Thus, recruitment is gradually becoming an alternative to traditional mobilization, offering more opportunities for conscious choice and more effective use of citizens’ skills in the military.
