Wadephul stated at the meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Canada that a decisive fight against corruption is a key condition for Western support to remain stable and convincing. “We support Ukraine and its independent institutions in these efforts,” he stressed.
Earlier, German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius emphasized that Berlin expects a full and transparent investigation of corruption allegations in the energy sector. However, the scandal does not currently affect the scale of Germany’s assistance to Ukraine.
Against the backdrop of Germany’s statements, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó expressed the opposite position, calling on the EU to stop “sending European citizens’ money to Ukraine” because of the corruption scandal.
Despite divergent views within the EU, Germany’s stance remains clear: support for Ukraine will continue, but Kyiv must more actively and decisively demonstrate anti-corruption reforms.
