The reform will come into force on April 1, 2026. This was announced by the head of the German Ministry of Internal Affairs, Alexander Dobrindt, in an interview with DW.
He explained that newly arrived Ukrainians will no longer receive citizen’s allowance (Bürgergeld) but will switch to the system of payments under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz).
Refugees will also be obliged to look for work. In the absence of efforts to find employment, social benefits may be further reduced.
In addition, the authorities will check the assets of arrivals—only those who do not have their own assets will receive aid.
