France plans to double fines and prison terms for ships that ignore orders and use false flags, including those linked to Russia, France24 reports, citing the draft updated military planning law.

Under the new regulations, violators could face up to two years in prison and a fine of €300,000. If there is a threat to the lives of people on board, penalties could increase to seven years in prison and a €700,000 fine. Sanctions will apply to all individuals who exercise control or management over the vessel.
The French Parliament is expected to review the bill by July 14. The changes come amid the detention of three ships since September suspected of belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
