Cheney was one of the most influential politicians in the Republican Party, having served in the administrations of four U.S. presidents. From 1989 to 1993, he headed the Department of Defense, and from 2001 to 2009, he served as Vice President in the administration of George W. Bush.
CNN calls Cheney “the most influential vice president in modern American history” and “the chief architect of the war on terror,” who played a key role in the U.S. invasion of Iraq following the September 11 attacks.
In his later years, Cheney remained a staunch conservative but became increasingly isolated within the Republican Party due to his outspoken criticism of current President Donald Trump, whom he called “a coward” and “the greatest threat to the republic in U.S. history.”
Cheney’s death marks the end of an entire era of American politics — one that shaped the United States’ global strategy at the beginning of the 21st century.
