European allies of Ukraine believe that a peace deal favoring the Russian Federation could trigger a larger-scale war across the continent, The Wall Street Journal reports.

European leaders emphasize that Russia could leave negotiations significantly strengthened militarily, feel confident in changing borders by force, and view NATO as a weak organization.
As WSJ notes, “European capitals, facing budget constraints, fear they will need to significantly increase military spending and strengthen defense preparations to maintain deterrence capability.”
At the same time, Donald Trump and his team are seeking a quick resolution to the conflict, but for Europe and Ukraine, a poor peace deal that leaves Kyiv weak and vulnerable is currently worse than no deal at all.
