The Estonian government has decided to impose a full ban on natural gas imports from Russia, which will take effect next year. The restriction will apply to all types of supplies, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), regardless of its use in the distribution network.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized that this decision is part of the country’s consistent policy to reduce energy dependence on Russia. “We will continue to raise the cost of aggression for Russia and seek ways to cut revenues that finance its military machine,” he stated. Similar restrictions will also apply to Belarus due to its support of Russia’s actions.
Estonia’s decision aligns with the policies of other Baltic countries: Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania have already restricted Russian LNG imports through various mechanisms, ranging from border closures to legislative bans.
The introduction of the ban also aligns with the EU’s RePowerEU initiative, aimed at gradually ending energy imports from Russia and limiting its financial capacity to wage war.
