The European Union intends to phase out Russian energy resources no later than 2027; however, Hungary and Slovakia oppose ending purchases from Gazprom.

Bulgaria plays a key role in this process, as the last branch of the “TurkStream” pipeline passes through its territory. Sofia has stated that it will not obstruct the phase-out of Russian gas and will act in line with EU policy.
Bulgaria’s Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov announced that by January 1, 2028, the consumption of Russian gas in Europe will be completely stopped. He also emphasized that there is sufficient time to transition to alternative energy sources, and starting next year, Bulgaria plans to organize joint tenders with neighboring countries to purchase American LNG.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov also confirmed the country’s readiness to join EU decisions for the fastest possible phase-out of Russian gas.
Meanwhile, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that his country lacks the infrastructure to replace Russian supplies and categorically rejects the possibility of a complete phase-out.
Experts believe that alternative supply options — including LNG and increased imports from Norway — are entirely realistic.
In the EU’s new sanctions package, one of the key elements will be a ban on imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia.
