In London, there are concerns about statements made by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas, who publicly discuss Ukraine’s future. British officials believe that such statements could backfire and push Trump to exclude Europe entirely from the negotiation process.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, following a joint statement on August 9, has refrained from comments, choosing a strategy of “influencing from behind the scenes.” According to sources, London considers it most effective to use closed channels of influence rather than public pressure.
“Unlike our European colleagues, we do not make public demands of the Americans. Often such behavior only irritates Washington and Trump himself,” said one British official.
