🇺🇦 Many citizens in Ukraine are currently being mobilized, and among them are many without any military experience. They join the defense of the country after completing military training.

However, not all mobilized soldiers are immediately sent to the front. OBOZ.UA collected explanations about where a conscript may be assigned after being called up and how their place of service is determined.

Mobilized individuals joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) must undergo military training. The duration may vary depending on experience and certain circumstances but is regulated by the Law “On Military Duty and Military Service” and does not change.

For Ukrainians without military experience who have been mobilized, training consists of three stages:

– BGVP (basic general military training) – 30 days;
– specialized training depending on the military occupational specialty – from 14 to 50 days;
– collective training – up to 15 days.

For recruits without prior military experience, training may last two to three months. During this time, future servicemen acquire a new military occupational specialty.

The training period for mobilized airborne troops is one to two months. Training duration for those with combat experience is up to one month, including combat coordination and basics.

After completing the respective training, these individuals are fully ready for military service. They may be sent to the front or assigned to rear service, explained earlier by Viktor Lyulchak, a representative of the Air Assault Forces Command Headquarters.

Where do they serve after mobilization?

Call-ups during general mobilization in Ukraine serve to replenish losses, fill units of the Defense Forces, and form army reserves. According to lawyers, the distribution mechanism depends on military necessity and the situation at the front.

Therefore, mobilized soldiers are sent to units where staffing or reinforcement is needed. These include:

– formations;
– military units;
– institutions and organizations;
– higher military educational institutions, military training units of higher education institutions, training units (centers) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations established according to Ukrainian laws;
– special law enforcement agencies with law enforcement functions.

The place of service is determined by the health condition of the conscript, established based on the results of a military medical commission (MMC), and also after completing the BGVP before service, as well as according to the needs of the Defense Forces at that time.

“For example, commanders of military units need a certain number of people with specific specialties. So an authorized person from the military unit goes to the training center with a list of necessary specialties and selects candidates. The primary consideration is specialization. But much also depends on the health of the mobilized person. There have been cases when a person has a certain specialty, but their condition hardly suits them for serving in that unit,” said lawyer Olena Voronkova.

Does having a referral guarantee placement in a specific unit?

A citizen subject to mobilization can obtain a referral and arrange with a military unit to serve there. However, lawyers say there is no full guarantee that after training, the mobilized person will go exactly where they want.

This is related to military necessity: somewhere at the front, there may be a higher demand for personnel than in those military units.

Lawyer Olena Voronkova explained that transferring between units can also be difficult. If it concerns one operational command, it is more feasible, but between different operational commands, it is very difficult.

“This is due to the shortage of qualified specialists, whom no one wants to release from their unit and hand over to someone else. The most likely way to get to a planned unit is when a representative of that military unit arrives at the training center with a referral and manages to take the candidate before someone else does,” she emphasized.
