The Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andriy Pyshnyi, stated that the country may completely abandon kopecks and switch to “shahy” by September 2, 2026, or possibly by the end of this year. He shared this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

According to him, everything depends on the political will of the parliament.
“For me, this is a matter of decommunization and decolonization. It is a return to our own historical values. The 1996 monetary reform is still unfinished — the kopeck remains as a trace of Moscow, since nowhere else in the world is it used as a fractional currency unit,” Pyshnyi said.
He added that this change requires no additional expenditures from the state budget, and kopecks will be gradually withdrawn without a sudden elimination.
Explaining the delay in the decision by the Verkhovna Rada, Pyshnyi suggested the reason may be the summer vacation period.
He emphasized that he hopes the decision will be made in 2025 so that by the 30th anniversary of the hryvnia in 2026, Ukraine will completely get rid of the “Moscow trace” in its own currency.
