According to the Ukrainian General Staff, from March 17 to 20, the Russians significantly increased the number of mechanized and motorized attacks on various sections of the front. The Russian command is relying on worsening spring weather, including fog, to reduce the effectiveness of Ukrainian drone and artillery strikes.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi noted that over four days, Russian infantry attacks resulted in more than 6,090 killed and wounded, averaging 1,520 losses per day. ISW experts emphasize that such massive losses significantly weaken Russia’s ability to conduct large-scale offensives in the medium and long term.
Analysts assess that Russian forces are unlikely to capture the “fortress belt” in 2026, although they may achieve local tactical gains at high cost. Internal Russian messages are already preparing the population for slow advances and significant losses, with the prospect of gradual movement toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
